Esplanade Ballroom (1991): a new 6,500-seat plenary session
meeting facility (50,000 sf) with a spacious atrium lobby.
This 126,000 sf facility includes administrative, dining,
mechanical and ancillary spaces, and sits atop the original
convention center. M+Ls design of the facilitys
long span steel framing received a James F. Lincoln Arc
Welding Foundation Award.
Moscone Center North (1992): a 507,000 sf underground
expansion, with exhibit spaces, meeting rooms and support
facilities. Three tunnels connect the new facilities to
the original facility (Moscone Center South). The long
span structural system of reinforced and post-tensioned
concrete is designed to support street level buildings
and gardens with loads up to 700 lbs/sf.
